You know, pro-veg(an/etarianism) groups need to stop trying to convert Americans from their meat-heavy diets. Asking Americans to make sacrifices is like asking the Pope to denounce God. What they really need to do is compete with the meat/dairy industries. They need to pour their money into research into synthetic meats and milk that are indistinguishable from real meat to the average person. Then they need to start promoting it as a healthier, safer (think of all of the meat-borne diseases), cheaper (eventually), and more satisfying alternative to the anti-environmental meat products. If people could get the same quality with the added benefits that synthetic meats would give, they'd start switching, because it would just provide advantages. Meat could still be available as a delicacy for the rich (demand goes down, supply drops, price would skyrocket) but since it would be in smaller quantities, the animals wouldn't be tortured their whole lives and the effect on the environment would be lessened drastically, so it wouldn't be a big deal. It'll never happen, though.
